The Enrichment Center, a full
service tutoring and enrichment center, is located at 424
Central Avenue in Westfield. The Enrichment Center, which
offers programming to students in pre-kindergarten through
grade 12, is open twelve months a year, seven days a week.
The modern facility is air-conditioned,
handicapped-accessible and has ample free on-site parking.
All 85 teachers at The Enrichment Center are New Jersey
State certified and experienced. Class size is limited to 8
students; private tutoring is always available.
The Enrichment Center focuses
on educational classes and themes. “Reading is one of the
corner stones of education,” states Mrs. Elaine Sigal, owner
and director of The Enrichment Center. “Our programs are
phonics based and start with children as young as 4 1/2
years old. We have reading programs that run through the 8th
grade and are comprehension oriented.” All children can
benefit from additional reading programs, be they in need of
remediation or be they gifted and in need of being
challenged. Gifted students benefit from special classes by
focusing on the concepts of the material, not just how to
read. Remedial students work on phonics and becoming more
efficient and effective readers. These are separate
classes. The philosophy of The Enrichment Center is that
education needs to be individualized and must be enjoyable.
If children are engrossed in what they are learning, the
potential for achievement is limitless.
Many school districts,
Westfield being just one, are now pre-testing children in
kindergarten to determine any potential difficulties. The
summer is an excellent time for parents to get extra help
for their children. Two months is a long time to be on a
hiatus from learning. Children can forget the skills needed
to progress in September. The
Enrichment Center has set up
additional reading readiness and reading skills classes for
the summer.
The Enrichment Center also
offers educational testing, which can put a parent’s mind at
ease. Students do not always perform at the level expected
from them in school. By testing students, The Enrichment
Center is able to find out why their reading performance is
not on par and then offers recommendations needed to correct
any deficiencies. All results are confidential and are kept
between the tester and the parent.
There are numerous sessions
offered by The Enrichment Center. Students may attend
Session I from July 1 – July 26 or Session II from July 31 –
August 23. These sessions run Monday – Friday from 9:30 –
12:30 or from 1:30 – 4:30. Before care is being offered for
both session times. Students may instead choose to attend
for eight weeks: Monday and Wednesday or Tuesday and
Thursday from 5:30 –8:30 or Saturday from 9:30 – 12:30. The
Enrichment Center is hoping that these varied schedules will
accommodate work schedules, vacation schedules, and other
summer programming.
