Test Programs |
PSAT - Preliminary
Scholastic Achievement
Test |
This is actually called
the PSAT/NMSQT, and is used to determine National Merit
Scholarships. Students take this test “for real” in
October of their Junior year. Many students also take
it for practice in their Freshman and/or Sophomore years
as well.
|
SAT - Scholastic
Achievement Test |
Students take the SAT in
the spring of their Junior year and again in the fall of
their Senior year.
|
|
SAT II - Subject Specific
Tests |
These tests are one hour
in length and are typically taken in the Junior and
Senior years. We recommend that students take these
tests in June of the year in which they take the
course. Subjects include biology, chemistry, AP
history, etc.
|
|
SAT for Middle School |
We have Middle School
students who have been invited to take the real SAT for
Johns Hopkins Gifted Program. Note that these students
are not placed in a class with High School students, but
in a separate class.
|
|
SSAT - Secondary
SAT |
Students take this as an
entrance exam into private high schools, in the fall of
their 8th grade year.
|
COOP - Catholic School
Admissions Test
|
This test is used in the
same way as the SSAT.

Curriculum |
|
On-going Classes |
This is The Enrichment
Center’s term to describe classes that run continuously,
from week to week. These students start classes with a
4-hour deposit and then they pay us each time they come
in. Cancellations are allowed with a 24 hour
notification to us.
|
|
Intensive Classes |
This is The Enrichment
Center’s term to describe a class that has a scheduled
beginning, middle and end. The teachers plan the
curriculum for a set number of weeks.
|
|
Every Day Math |
This is the name of a text
book that is used with The Chicago Math Program, and the
curriculum is different than other programs. We have
specific classes set up for those students who are in
this program.
|
|
Pre-K -
Pre-Kindergarten
|
Children enrolled in these
classes must be 4 years old by September 30. |
G&T - Gifted and
Talented
|
These students are very
bright! |
|
Hands-on |
It is our belief that
students need to be actively involved with their
education. We do not believe in spectator education
where children just sit. Our students participate.
|
IEP - Individual
Educational Plan |
Set up by a child study
team to allow for individual learning differences.
Individual plans allow us to customize programs
including, working with learning disabilities.
|
|
504 |
Similar to the IEP.

College
Admission Options
[from Newsweek magazine] |
|
Early Admission |
Students are accepted
before they graduate high school, a rare choice.
|
|
Early Decision |
Students agree to attend
if accepted. The deadline is usually early November and
students learn in early or mid-December whether they are
accepted, deferred to the spring or rejected. Some
schools also offer Early Decision II with a January
deadline. That's often a strategic choice for students
rejected in the first early round who want to try for a
less competitive college and still get the Early
Decision edge.
|
|
Early Action |
This is similar to Early
Decision, but nonbinding. Students who are accepted can
wait until May to see what their other options are. In
general, students don't get as much of a competitive
advantage from Early Action, but they can at least learn
their fate by Christmas.
|
|
Rolling Decision |
Offered mostly by large
public universities, this is basically a variation of
first-come, first-serve. Students should apply early in
the year, when there are the most spaces available. It's
not binding.
|
|
Regular Decision |
This is the traditional
procedure. Students generally apply by early January and
hear in the spring. Deposits are due May 1.
